I have been asking who, what, when, where and why questions at least since high school journalism classes, and probably earlier. A graduate of the University of Illinois journalism program, I’ve honed my eye for detail as a newspaper reporter, publicist and freelance writer.
Between 2004 and 2009 I was the in-house copyeditor/proofreader at Metropolitan Group, a Portland-based PR and marketing agency with a social responsibility focus and offices in four cities. I reviewed copy written for all client projects, both print and online, as well as all agency marketing copy.
As a freelance editor and proofreader, I’ve provided peace of mind on print and online projects for clients for 20-plus years: for colleges, nonprofits, advertising and PR agencies, graphic and Web designers, book publishers, mail order catalog companies, government agencies and more. I have also copyedited nonfiction books for self-published authors.
On the writing side, I’ve written hundreds of articles for local and national newspapers and magazines as well as online media, the majority related to food, urban agriculture, health and wellness. I’ve written newsletters, press releases and other marketing materials for small businesses, nonprofits and PR agencies. I wrote and self-published a cookbook on tofu in 1980 that led to writing a natural foods column in New Age Journal and stimulated my never-ending fascination with food and where it intersects with health and environment.
